OUR PROCESS

Maison B creates unique burnt wood pieces using the traditional Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban (or Yakisugi), the art of preserving wood with fire.

Used for centuries in Japan for outdoor siding, Maison B brings this beauty inside the home. to create functional, and even wearable, wood art.

We use propane torches to hand fire each piece and bring out different colors and textures in the wood.  It is like painting with fire. The canvas is a variety of hard and soft woods, including cedar, pine, maple, cherry, walnut, and cypress.

Once burned we preserve the dark black char, or sand it away to reveal the wood grain below.  Some pieces are burned two, or even three times, to deepen the results.  The process is completed with a natural Tung Oil Finish.

There are no pigments or dyes.  All color comes from the burning process.
